When Yu Narukami’s family moves to the rural country town of Inaba, he’s expecting a lot more peace and quiet than he’s been used to in the big city. Instead, the peace is quickly shattered as a rash of mysterious murders and kidnappings sweep the countryside. With the police stymied, Yu finds himself joining with a group of eight other teenagers in a desperate bid to solve the mystery - a mystery that is somehow connected to both the local weather patterns and a strange video game world which Yu, his friends and the enigmatic killer can all enter...
Right. Persona 4 is based on a Playstation game about which I know nothing, but so far at least it doesn't seem to be relying much on knowledge of the game, which is a good thing. On the other hand, it's clearly a mystery series, and those I'm not hugely keen on - anime at least has a habit of not thinking through its mysteries, and I've been disappointed by solutions that don't make a hell of a lot of sense too many times to really want to bother. Still, this seems to be one of the more anticipated shows of the season, and I can't deny that the first episode is both visually impressive and intriguing in the way that it goes about setting itself up. So far, so good.
THE GOOD: Looks good, is more intriguing with its setup than I thought it would be, characters seem a decent enough bunch.
THE BAD: Being sucked into a TV!? And the visible stitching on the uniforms catches the eye way too much - annoying as hell. But those are niggles.
Keeper for now, then. But there remains a little niggle of doubt about how it's going to play out. Hopefully it won't disappoint me.
