Sunabouzu - Episode 1After a few worthy adaptations (including Count of Monte Christo and Samurai 7), GONZO return to a more familiar style with Sunabouzu

Now, if they can just balance comedy & drama a bit better than they did with Full Metal Panic!, we could be on to a winner.  Early impressions are good...

1 - The Demon and the Boobs
Picture your typical post-apocalyptic wasteland world, and add one very short bounty-hunter with attitude - Sunabouzu, the "Demon of the Sand", with a reputation for completing every job he takes on. This time, he's after the head of the Kawazu clan. He manages to draw him out with a mean line in personal insults, but can he finish him off? And can he keep his hands to himself when he finds an unconscious babe in the desert? Nah...

2 - Sand and Rain
Sunabouzu's having a hard time thinking straight - all he can see are the wonderful breasts of his new rival, Asagiri Junko (her with the boobs from episode 1). Still, he has a job to do - collecting an overdue debt, except that another rival, Amagumo, has beaten him to it. When they find their debtor isn't in any position to repay the debt, Amagumo's happy to settle for taking his daughter instead of his money, but that doesn't rest well with Sunabouzu...

Think Trigun, with more comedy. Sunabouzu is no Vash the Stampede in terms of his capability for destruction, but he wins hands down for comedy value. 'Boob girl' Junko seems to be set up as a recurring rival, which I personally think is a good thing - the comedy potential of these two playing off against each other is just too good.

That said, the story's as shallow as a desert oasis at the moment. I'm hoping there's another Trigun comparison to be made in the form of a decent plot kicking in at some stage - comedy's okay, but sticking to a formula can get tired quite quickly (2x2=Shinobuden, anyone?), but we'll see. At this stage, I'm happy with what I'm seeing - just hoping GONZO will build on it instead of keeping to the slapstick approach.
