It's not that long since my last post about magical girls, and here we are again. This weekend's news that the fine people at 4Kids (aka 4Ka$h, 4Skin, or other derogatory mis-print of your choice..) had picked up the licence for Futari wa Pretty Cure was enough to drive any true mahou shoujo fan to despair. Are US fans doomed to never see a magical girl series get the full, bilingual treatment?
Last time something like this happened (when Tokyo Mew Mew was licensed), I was pissed enough to take righteous fan action, and the Mew Mew Alliance was born. 18 months down the line and having had some dealings with 4Kids along the way, I'm now convinced that no matter how much we may wail and moan, a bilingual release is just not going to happen - for as long as there are kids lapping up the TV airings & buying the merchandise, there's just no incentive for Al Kahn & co to turn their attention to capturing the dedicated fans (although that hasn't stopped me from picking up precurealliance.net, just in case!).
What next? There are some other good, unlicensed mahou shoujo series out there (Lyrical Nanoha and Magical Canan come to mind), but the next "big name" title in the works looks set to be Sasami Mahou Shoujo Club, which carries all the weight of being a Tenchi spinoff and being a re-working of an already-popular show. Save us, Geneon, you're our only hope...!
