Newsweek has a little article this week on YouTube's influence on the online world, which they've noticed is now spreading to Japan. They've also notice the part a certain godlike schoolgirl is playing in the site's success there:
YouTube has become a major conduit of the popular buzz. A cartoon aired by a local TV station, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, has become a national phenomenon, thanks to more than 2,000 related clips, including parodies, now available on YouTube.
You really should check out some of those parodies, by the way - the Gundam one is particularly good. I wonder what Haruhi would think if she knew she'd appeared in one of the world's leading news magazines (there's even a picture of her in the print edition of the magazine). Her mission to conquer the world continues...
