Time for Jil and his allies to finally prove themselves, as Druaga finally appears - but there's dissent in the ranks over tactics when Jil has a rush of blood to the head after seeing Neeba run into trouble. Will the gang survive long enough to take on the beast..?
Druaga finally shows itself - a gigantic creature, towering far above those who have gathered to defeat him. Neeba and his party are the first to face off against it, but their level of power is so far below that of the demon god that they soon find themselves facing defeat - especially after Pazuz intervenes to stop Neeba taking a clear shot. Seeing his brother in trouble, Jil tries to go to his aid, but Kaaya tries to stop him, insisting that they should continue to make their way toward the top floor of the Tower. But Jil's not about to listen to her, and his insistence on fighting here and now soon leads to tragedy...
Is that really Druaga, or is there something sneaky going on here? Here's why: he may be stomping around the Shrine of Sky in all his demonic glory, but there's the small matter of Neeba's and Jil's ghostly companions to consider, and they certainly seem to have more of a role in events that are playing out here than any incorporeal being should really have. Things that make you go "Hmmm...".
Even if the big fella isn't the demon lord we seek, though, he certainly packs plenty of punch, and that's proven by the second death of the series. It was just as unexpected as the first, and being a lot closer to the core cast it actually meant something, too - even if the old anime habit of making death take far too long did come into play. After the comic scenes that made the early part of Druaga so much fun, it still surprises me how easily the show has slipped into a much more serious mould without spoiling the appeal of the story. Quite a trick they pulled off.
One thing that still sticks out, though, is the little undercurrent of conspiracy that has been surrounding Kaaya, and that so far remains largely unexplained and unresolved. The next episode marks the end of the series, so there had better be some time spent dealing with that or there'll be black marks handed out. Hopefully that won't be necessary - and I can't wait to find out...
