BLASSREITERBLASSREITER takes a break from plot and goes for the action approach with this episode, and in doing so continues its transition from a dull and tedious way to spend time to something far more enjoyable. Although I doubt that Amanda is enjoying the way events are unfolding around her...

In the midst of the chaos, Hermann and Amanda are trapped in XAT's compound with Al and Brad. Wolf has joined with the other Amalgams and seems determined to bring the remaining XAT agents over to his side, whether by persuasion or force, so Amanda and the others decide to try and get away from the area as quickly as possible - but Al and Brad soon begin to show signs of Amalgamation. Aware of what's happening to them and that their time is running out, they promise to help Amanda and Hermann (who so far seem unaffected) escape while they still can. Outside, Joseph is facing off against Beatrice, who is revealed to be an Amalgam herself...

Last ones standingWolf Amalgamated

Events of this episode, through one reason or another, pretty much leave Amanda and Joseph as the last ones standing on this side of humanity - everyone else you've seen in the series so far is now either dead or an Amalgam. There's not much explaining about how we reached this point - even when Wolf and Xargin are in the mood for explaining themselves, the focus of the episode is firmly on the action side of things and so the information only comes in small bursts - but there's enough going on that the episode flies by in a decently enjoyable 25 minutes. It's not that long ago that I would have considered that impossible.

With the initial setup of the series now in tatters, though, the next big question is, what happens next? Is the world outside the city where XAT was based still operating as normal, or is the Amalgam outbreak on a global scale? Just who are Xargin and Beatrice working for, and what issues do they have with each other that are keeping them so hostile to each other (after all, neither is exactly what you'd call one of the ghood guys)? Will Amanda be able to put the past behind her and join forces with Joseph? All questions that need to be answered once the show takes a step back from the mayhem of recent episodes.

BLASSREITER can't possibly keep up this pace for the rest of its run (can it?), so I'm expecting events to take a breather soon - hopefully that won't mean the show reverts to its former dull & meandering self, but instead manages to built on this recent run of decent episodes. I'm starting to get more into the series now that it's making more sense - it would be a real shame if that good work is undone.
