 One of the biggest complaints I've had about BLASSREITER is that it makes no sense. Now it seems as though someone at GONZO has been hearing these complaints (and I'm far from the only person making them), and so BLASSREITER NAVIGATOR has been released as a free, 'bonus' episode to try and help the show make sense. Let's see how well that works...
Essentially, NAVIGATOR is a recap episode with wings. It covers the events of episodes 1-12, but as well as doing the usual recap thing of providing a lot of clips to give the show's edited "highlights" (I use the term with a wry grin), there's a voiceover that provides explanations of what you're seeing on the screen. It's split into short segments, each covering a different subject: Demoniacs, XAT, characters, and so on, almost in the style of a video glossary. In principle, this should be just what we're looking for, right?
Unfortunately, all the episode did was convince me even more that BLASSREITER is really beyond saving. The information given out is really only of use to anyone who hasn't seen any of the series up to now - what's given out is on a very basic level, and if you've been watching the series you'll know it all already. There's nothing new that can be used to tie together all the show's loose points and incomprehensible plot twists, and come the end I can't say that anything made any more sense. The flash presentation may persuade a few people to give the series a chance at this late stage, but they'll probably be hugely disappointed once they start watching the series proper.
No something that's really worth watching, then - which is probably why it's free. Scores three stars through being decent enough in execution, but because of the quality of the show it's promoting, I have to say don't bother...
