Another dip into the archives, with a quick look at the Sailor Moon SuperS specials...
1 - An Elegant Metamorphosis? Crybaby Usagi's Growth Diary
Kind of a 'preview' to the main SuperS series, this short gives a preview of SuperS's
enemies - and now that Chibiusa a full-fledges senshi herself, takes a
look back to what Usagi was like when she first took on the role of
Sailor Moon - much to her embarrasment...
2 - The Return of Haruka & Michiru! The Ghostly Puppet Show
Far away from Tokyo and any need to go saving the Earth, Haruka &
Michiru are enjoying life. While staying at a hotel, Haruka is taken
ill with a fever (not that it's stopping her from flirting with the
room maid...), when Michiru feels the presence of something evil. Not
something Earth-threatening, but enough for them to consider it a
danger - seems a puppet-master working at the hotel may be more than he
appears...
3 - Chibiusa's Adventure! The Dreaded Vampire Castle
There's a new student in Chibiusa's class - Ririka, who's cute enough
to grab the attention of all the guys. She lives in the old Embassy,
which has been rumoured to be haunted. When one of the class boys goes
missing after walking Ririka home, Chibiusa & Momoko investigate -
and find that Ririka really isn't likely to be worried about her home
being haunted, when she's a vampire herself...
Set outside any of the Sailor Moon series & storylines,
these shorts are just a little fun for the die-hard fans. The first
'episode' is really just a clipshow, with nothing new to it to make it
worthwhile watching. The second story give Michiru/Haruka fans a chance
to catch up on what their favourite characters are up to - they didn't
feature in the main SuperS storyline, returning only in Stars. Interesting enough, and with a few hints at the yuri nature of their relationship to keep the fanfic authors going. :)
The final episode's value depends on what your tolerance of Chibiusa
is. For me, it was a fun little episode - anything featuring vampires
works for me, and Ririka would give Hazuki (Tsukuyomi Moon Phase) a run for her money in the cuteness stakes, even without nekomimi.
It's a shame the R1 release of SuperS didn't include these specials - while they don't really add much to the Sailor Moon universe, they're fun enough to make them worthwhile. |
