Time to quickly squeeze a new review in between all the convention
news. :) Here's another new show that doesn't seem to go anywhere - a
few brief ramblings on the first episode of Hinotori...
1 - The Sunrise (Part I)
It's said that if you drink the blood of the Phoenix, you become
immortal - and so when a young girl, Hinaku, lies dying, her husband
Uraji goes in search of the legendary bird in an attempt to save her
life. Sadly, he's killed in the attempt - but another hope for her
arrives when a physician, Guzuri, is washed up on the nearby shore,
victim of a shipwreck. The village chief initially wants him killed,
but when he learns he's a healer he offers to spare him - if he can
save Hinaku's life. Time passes - Hinaku has been healed, love has
blossomed between Hinkau and Guzuri & they're about to be married,
but Guzuri's people are bent only an conquest and soon send an invasion
force...
You meet all these new characters, you start to like some & not
like others, but by the end of the first episode they're all dead. What
a way to start the show...
Okay, to be fair, 2 survive, but after taking the time to introduce
a large cast it still seems a strange way to go. As for the story
itself, there's still not an awful lot to go on: the volcano hear the
villiage is home to a phoenix, said to hold the key to eternal life.
Naturally enough, anything with that power is going to be the target
for those who want power of their own - which is the rout the story
seems to be taking. Unfortunately, there wasn't enough of interest in
this first episode to make me want to watch more of it. Pass... |
