Gankutsou - Episode 1There seems to be a trend at the moment for giving classic literature the anime treatment - here's the latest example, Gankutsou...

1 - We Will Meet at the End of our Trip
The planet of Luna's newest 'celeb' is the man known only as the Count of Monte Christo - any real facts about him are unknown, but the gossips would have you believe he made his fortune from space trading, or perhaps even that he's a vampire. Parisian traveller Albert, entranced by the mystery surrounding the count, attempts to get to know him, even going so far as to attend a public execution with him. So begins Albert's decent into the Count's darkness

Another new GONZO show, this time from the man behind Blue Submarine #6, and following in the footsteps of Samurai 7 by attempting a conversion of a classic story. Sometimes that works, and sometime it doesn't

The main problems here is that there are many cases were the artwork just doesn't look right, and the animation looks downright cheap - for an example, there's an attempt to use details patterns on coats and other objects, but it seems to be done using chromakey - leaving the characters moving, but the patterns on their coats staying still. It's really hard on the eyes and just looks awful, and it happens quite a bit.

The story itself (a tale of deception and revenge, apparently) seems to be okay as far as it goes, but it's very slow moving and, after these two episodes, I found it hadn't really made much of an impression on me. Add in the 'unique style' of the presentation, and I think I'll pass...
