Personally, I hate it when an anime tries to be educational. While Gallery Fake
techinically isn't, it does go to great lengths to explain the world of
high-end art & auctioning, while trying to build a story around the
lead character, art-dealer Reiji. The end result, sadly,
doesn't turn out so well...
1 - The Man from Gallery Fake
Reiji Fujita runs quite an unusual art gallery - 'Gallery Fake', where
all the pieces of art on show are forgeries. Behind the scenes, though,
he's selling the real thing at really high prices on the black market.
Reiji's currently in New York, along with his assistant, Sara Misimura,
on the lookout for a few bargains to restock his gallery with - but a
chance meeting with a former 'colleague' makes the trip a bit more
complicated than he had planned for...
A lot of wonderful information about the high-end art market &
the
work put into making fake pieces look authentic, but on the basis of
this first episode, a rather dull idea for a series. A funky OP
theme & some cute female eye-candy sadly can't help it, while the
themes of revenge and payback that seem to be coming to the fore
already need a bit more motivation behind them that what's on offer
here before they'd be believeable - while I'm prepared to believe that
museum worker have their rivalrys just like any other workplace, it
seems a bit over-played here.
End result is a show that I really don't care enough about to continue watching. Pass.
