With the previous generation of Roses now firmly out of the way, MariMite
turns its attention to the new intake of petite soeur, and how they
come to be chosen, before taking a detour to keep Yoshino fans
happy. The great thing about all these new characters, is that
you realy don't quite know what to expect...
8 - The Cherry-Blossom Tree Amongst the Ginkos
After Noriko discovers that Shimako is the daughter of a Bhuddist
shrine, Shimako shares her reasons for wanting to attend a Catholic
school with her, and asks her to keep it a secret - if it became
public, it could cause problems for the shrine. Not that secrets
ever stay that way for long, as the rest of the Yamayurikai have
recently found out, courtesy of Sei. Yumi's upset by the
revelation, especially when she discovers that Shimako and Noriko are
becoming closer - does it mean that Yumi & the others aren't of any
use to Shimako? Touko's equally curious about Shimako &
Noriko, although more for reasons of noseyness than anything else - but
what she finds out leads the other Roses to decide a little test of
Noriko's character is in order...
9 - The Drops of the Rosary
Now that Shimako and Noriko have owned up to their Bhuddist
backgrounds, the rest of the Yamayurikai turn their attention to
persuading Shimako to 'choose' her petite soeur - as if it's not
obvious who Shimako would like it to be. Shimako being Shimako,
though, takes her time about getting around to it, but when she does
finally ask Noriko if she'll accept her rosary, Noriko steers around
the question and doesn't give an answer. Left undecided about
what to do next, Shimako takes some time to think about what she really
wants, while the other Roses begin to push her to make up her mind
soon...
10 - The Yellow Rose Admonition
When Yoshino announces to Rei that she's planning on joining the Kendo
club, Rei's not at all happy with the idea (because of worries about
Yoshino's health) and a blazing row breaks out - enough so that Yoshino
would have returned Rei's rosary, if she had remembered to bring it
with her - although after being given some time to consider Yoshino's
stubbornness, Rei herself begins to think about whether it's worth
continuing their soeur relationship. One good thing may come out
of Yoshino's actions, though, when one of the girls at the club makes
enough of an impression for Yoshino to consider taking her as her
petite soeur...
If there's one thing that really stands out about this season of MariMite,
it's that it needs more Yumi - the poor girl has been sorely under-used
these last few episodes. That said, Shimako manages to carry her
two episodes really with, with a little help from Noriko - of the new
characters seen so far, she's definitely my personal favourite.
You can't help but love the outsider.
Episode 10 brings things back to feeling more like the first season,
and it's abot time Yoshino got a decent outing. While this
episode deals mostly with the battle of wills between Yoshino &
Rei, there's also a possible pointer towards a possibly petite soeur
for Yoshino, which ould keep it within what weems to be the 'theme' of
the past few episodes.
Other than that, not much to say - MariMite is MariMite.
As always, its pacing means you have to be in a particular mood before
you sit down to watch it, and anyone who likes even the slightest bit
of action in their anime will need to look elsewhere - but if you're
prepared to give the show some of your time, it'll reward you for it.
