There are some parts of the Sailor Moon franchise that look destined never to appear in R1, and Ami's First Love is the one most fans would want to see (with the possible exception of Stars)...
The girls are in the middle of preparing for their high-school
entrance exams, when the unthinkable happens - someone's out-scoring
Ami on the mock tests. She's also been getting love letters (which is
pretty unusual in itself) - could they be coming from the person who's
beating her? Ami being Ami is more interested in studying than love,
but she's curious about what kind of person her rival is - and taking
the whole 'rivals' thing just a bit too seriously. With her mind
totally devoted to studying, a demon sees the opportunity to make use
of her single-mindedness...
This is a fun little short, and Ami fans get to see her animated
with more attention-to-detail than ever gets lavished on the rest of
the girls. I've often wondered why Ami rated her own special when the
rest of the gang didn't, but that's for another time.
The story here is as shallow as any Sailor Moon filler
episode - it just looks a lot better. Bearing that in mind, there's not
a lot to write. Ami fans will love it, fans of the rest of the senshi
will feel justifiably hard done by - but if you're a fan of Sailor Moon, this is really a must-see, especially as it's unlikely it will ever see an R1 release. |
