Loveless - Title CardYaoi fans rejoice - this one's for you.  It also seems to have a healthy dose of shounen fighting action and an obsession with catboys and catgirls, so it seems that Loveless's creators are trying to balance out the "Eww! Yaoi!" factor by throwing in a few other aspects that will hopefully appeal to a large audience.  No matter how cute the lead catgirl may be, though, it doesn't really work for me...

1 - Breathless
There's a new boy in class - Aoyagi Ritsuka, who's transferred from another school under somewhat dubious circumstances.  He immediately makes an impression on class cutie Hawatari Yuiko, but despite her best efforts she doesn't seem to be able to get much of a reaction from him, other than some scathing criticism.  Just the way to be a hit with the girls, Ritsuka-kun.  Part of the problem is that he doesn't seem to have gotten over the murder of his brother, Seimei, a few years earlier - so it's a surprise to him when he's accosted on leaving the school by a man, Soubi, who claims to have known his brother.  The connection to the person he's lost leads Ritsuka to try and strike up a friendship with Soubi, but Soubi seems to be looking for something more when he kisses Ritsuka & declares his love.  Soubi claims to be a Fighter, willing to protect him - and Ritsuka gets his first experience of what that means when another Fighter appears & attacks them...

Loveless - Ritsuka meets YuikoLoveless - Rituka's first kiss stolen...

They lost me with the fighting side of things, I'm afraid - I saw that side of the story coming to the fore and pretty much lost interest.  Even the rather cute catgirl / catboy setting couldn't quite save it, no matter how cute it may make the show appear.

Soubi is a Fighter - what he's fighting for isn't revealed yet, but I'm guessing that since he's drawing power from Ritsuka it may not be a good thing.  Soubi's previous source on energy was Ritsuka's brother, Seimei - perhaps Soubi was involved in his death?  Who's to say, but it may be a pointer to where the show is going.

Yuiko makes for some good eye-candy and provides the comic interest, with the potential for some love interest there as well, providing Soubi doesn't get in the way.

There are some interesting angles tucked away in Loveless, but it's just not presented in a way that made me want to keep watching.  Pass.
