There seems to be a trend this season with trying to mix genres, which Izumo
seems to be happily following - this time, it's harem / h-game
conversion meets shounen fighting show, which is a combo that sets all
sorts of alarm bells ringing with me. Sadly, this doesn't seem to
be one of those shows that surprises me by being more that I expected,
either...
1 - A Voice Calling from Within a Dream
I'm sure Takeru Yagi thinks life is hard, what with being rudely
awakened by his harem of girls each morning. I'd disagree,
myself. He has no family of his own, however, and has been taken
in by Rokusuke Touma, who looks after him along with neighbour girls
Kotono and Asuka Shiratori. In school, he's something of a master
at kendo - there's only one other student who can beat him, Takashi
Yamato, but there's problems when Takeru is picked ahead of Takeshi to
represent the school in an upcoming tournament. Meanwhile,
there's a new transfer student in class, Seri Oosu, who claims to know
him. It's all news to Takeru, until her trademark violence helps
to remind him. Later, strange things begin to happen when Takeru
and Takashi handle an ancient sword that Rokusuke's been keeping...
The fighting aspect of the series comes from Takeshi, who goes all
evil
after handling the sword, setting up the battles between the two male
leads. Both Takeru and childhoos friend Shiratori Kotono have
been having strange dreams of late, and at the end of episode one the
gang are transported to some sort of alternate world, where the story
will progress...
Meh. Friends-turned-enemies tends to make for interesting
storyline (Yui & Miaka from Fushigi Yuugi being the best example),
but there wasn't really enough background given here as to why it
happened, other than 'something mystical'. I can't say the
characters really caught my attention, either - I was almost watching
the episode on auto-pilot, waiting for some aspect of things to stand
out and grab me, but nothing did.
Meaning Izumo gets added to the 'pass' pile. It's
quite possible that if there were more hours in the day that I could
spend checking out a few more episodes, it may improve, but
unfortunately I don't have that much spare time. Moving quickly
onwards...
