I'm sensing a trend here. He is My Master is the latest series from GAINAX and SHAFT, makers of Mahoromatic and Kono Minikuku mo Utsukushii Seikai,
two shows that indulge quite heavily in the fanservice
department. This show is no different in that respect, even if
the setting is - it's time to break out the maid uniforms again...
1 - He is My Master!?
Izumi Sawatari and her younger sister Mitsuki have run away from home
& are looking for jobs with accommodation provided - so it's a
stroke of luck when they pass a huge mansion that appears to be
hiring. Although dinging the mansion's owner with a garden
ornament maybe isn't the best thing to do before you ask him for a
job. The owner's Yoshitaka Nakabayashi, a young boy who's also
lost his parents, and is now looking for some maids - as much to have
someone else around the house as anything else. While he seems a
nice enough person at first glance, as soon as he gets the two girls
into the house, his attitude changes & Izumi soon finds out why
Yoshitaka has no other servants - and he's not about to let his two new
employees get away. But Mitsuki has her own way of keeping people
in check - her pet alligator, Pochi...
2 - That Vase, it's 5,000,000...
After a night sleeping out in Yoshitaka's garden, Izumi and Mitsuki
finally decide that working for the jerk maybe won't be so bad after
all - at least his mansion would make a good place to live.
Seeing the new maid uniforms he's made for them soon changes Izumi's
mind - although Mitsuki does't seem to be bothered. Izumi's all
set to walk out again, until Yoshitaka reminds her how much all the
stuff she broke during her first visit to the house was worth.
He's expecting to be paid back, so Izumi may not have much choice - so
when Mitsuki suggests a winner-is-the-boss contest, she's not about to
say no...
To be honest, there's nothing here so far other than the fanservice
and slapstick comedy, but I'm not really complaining. Perhaps I
was just in a really juvenile mood when I watched these episodes, but I
was grinning like an idiot the whole way through. I assume
something deeper will be added to the story later - there always is
with GAINAX / SHAFT shows - but there's no hint of it so far.
Yoshitaka genuinely is a jerk - although there's some heart in there
somewhere, i's having a hard time getting out, but it seems Izumi may
just be the person who can bring out his good side. Mitsuki so
far seems to be the set-up person for a lot of the gags, while Pochi
will be a love-him-or-hate-him character for most people. His
chasing of Izumi is great fun, but it could wear thin really quickly.
Don't forget the fanservice, which is of the same high standards set by Mahoro and KonoMini.
The character designs are more manga-style than you see in most anime
series, but the girls are still pleasing on the eyes.
Overall, He is My Master is great fun and well worth checking out if fanservice is your thing.
