Page 1 of 2 Kiddy Grade finally gets to the real action, as
Eclair and Lumiere give up running and take the fight to GOTT - or do
they? If there's ever a disc where you want to pay very close
attention to what's going on, this is it. But first, there are a
few warm-up encounters with other ES-Members to get through in one
piece.
13 - Conflict / Destiny
With Eclair and Lumiere having 'escaped' the SO Team's effort to
capture them, Eclipse is having to resort to more drastic methods and
disptaches Un-ou and A-ou to 'eliminate the fugitives', and it doesn't
take them long to track the girls down. Un-ou seems to have a
dislike for Eclair and Lumiere and is only too happy to carry out his
orders, and his attack on the girls' ship leaves Lumiere seriously
injured. Eclair lands on an abandoned space station in the hope
of getting medical help for her friend, but time is running short as
Un-ou and A-ou close in - and the station they've run to only helps
bring up more bitter memories for both sides...
14 - Steel / Heart
Life on the run continues - La Muse has set down on a remote planet
that's in the midst of being terraformed. With the terraforming
station crew being the only other people on the planet, it should be
easy enough to hide if need be, while the terraforming station should
have the parts needed to repair La Muse after their run-in with Un-ou
and A-ou. What Eclair and Lumiere don't know is that Tweedledum
and Tweedledee have already tracked them down, and while they're away
acquiring spare parts, Tweedledee is doing some damage of her own to La
Muse...
15 - Break / Down
Eclair and Lumiere have had enough of running, and it's time to fight
back, with a direct assault on GOTT's headquarters. Eclipse seems
to be expecting their visit, and has ordered all available ES-Members
to remain on standby - but even then, the scale of the assault
surprises them, even if Lumiere is her usual polite self
throughout. With the available ES-Members unable to stop Eclair's
& Lumiere's advance, a final confrontation with Eclips is only a
matter of time...
This is where I got confused the first time around - second time
around, I'm beginning to see what I missed that makes events make a lot
more sense. If you don't mind spoilers, check page 2 of this
review for a few thoughts on the subject.
Otherwise, it's great to see the series break from it's original
"mission of the week" format and get down to the serious business of
the fate of the galaxy. The ending of the battle with Un-ou and
A-ou was a bit unbelieveable - if I'd been in Eclair's shoes I would
have been far more concerned with making sure Un-ou was never a threat
again - but I think that's part of developing the personality of this
Eclair, as opposed to the more ruthless personality her precursor seems
to have had.
Tweedledee and Tweedledum don't seem to have quite the same ability to
ignore their orders as Un-ou and A-ou, which makes their battles with
our heroes a bit strange - if you don't want to do it, walk away, as
byt the time the two meet in GOTT HQ it's clear the organisation won't
be left standing if Eclair gets her way. An interesting 9/11
parallel at the end of the disc, too.
I'm looking forward to seeing the next volume of Kiddy Grade,
especially now that I think I've worked out some of the less obvious
story hints. Events are picking up speed nicely, making this disc
an easy recommendation.
