Hmm. Last time I took a look at this series, I wrote that "Gakuen Alice treads the same sort of ground as Ultra Maniac,
but manages to be more appealing in the way it does it..." I take
it all back. While these episodes do give Mikan a chance to show
off her powers, I found myself completely underwhelmed by what was
going on...
3 - I'm Not Going to Lose to Any Alice!
No sooner has Mikan joined her new class than she manages to upset the
calss rebels. Bad enough in a normal school, but in one where the
kids have magical powers it's really a bad idea - especially since
Mikan doesn't know what her own Alice is yet. Although the others
in the class do their best to make her feel worthless, though, Mikan's
not about to be bullied so easily...
4 - This is My Alice
Having been set the task of making it through the Academy's Northern
Woods, Mikan heads off with Hotaru and Iinchou, with the staff watching
her on video all the while. At first the obstacles in the forest
are a bit much for Mikan to handle - if it wasn't for Hotaru and her
gadgets, she'd be in trouble real quick. When Natsume interrupts
the test & threatens Mikan, though, her Alice is finally revealed -
the ability to negate other Alices...
Hmm. Natsume has an unwanted Alice, Mikan can negate it - do
I see a love interest being set up here? If I was planning on
watching any further, I'd be hugely surprised if Mikan & Natsume
don't form a major plank of the plot, but to be honest I've prestty
much lost interest. Hotaru's inventions & dead-pan attitude
to everything continue to be the best part of the show, but Mikan's
general attitude and the stuck-up, let's-get-her approach of the rest
of the class just annoyed me to the point where I couldn't bring myself
to watch any further.
So Gakuen Alice ends up on the 'pass' pile. There
is some good stuff here, but for me sitting through the bad to see it
just wasn't worth the effort. |
