Sometimes anime will find a formula and stick to it, no matter what - which is what Mahoraba ~Heartful Days~
seems to have done. The important thing is for that formula to be
a good one, and that's maybe not quite the case here. Cute
characters do not a great series make, and this one unfortunately just
falls short of the 'gotta watch more' mark...
3 - The Precious Place
Episode 3, and time for Kozue's third personality to appear - Nanako,
who's not the quickest girl out of the blocks & has the personality
of a six-year-old. Once she takes an interest in someone, she's
impossible to shake off - and she's just taken an interest in
Shiratori. It looks like it's going to be a long day for him, as
the time he'd put aside for studying suddenly becomes babysitting time.
Once Kozue returns to normal, it's finally time for Shiratori's welcome
party...
4 - Warm and Fuzzy
First day of the new school term, and Shiratori hasn't managed to get
his assignments done - there have been too many parties going on at
Narutakisou for him to have been able to do them. After a very
brief run-in with is new teacher, it's a mistake he'll never make
again. Later, his classmates get to meet Kozue after they run
into each other after school - Kozue tags along when Shiratori goes
shopping for art materials, and for some reason everyone seems to think
they're a couple...
I have to admit I'd pretty much lost interest in Mahoraba by the
end of these episodes - there's really just not enough
going on to keep the attention. With three personalities out in
the open and I think one more to come, there's a definite feeling that
the show is going to get stuck in a rut and just cycle through the same
gags each time a given personality appears (case in point: Saki makes
another brief appearance here, and I don't think you'd notice the
difference if the scene had been run side-by-side with her first
outing).
Cute chara designs do not a great
series make, or Mahoraba would be a shoo-in, but while what's here is
fun enough to watch, it falls short of being appealing enough for me to
want to watch a whole 26-episode series of it. Pass...
