Slice of life with a twist - Kamichu! has something of the same feel as Zettai Shonen
in the way it presents itself as an everyday story, but has that one
twist in the setting that makes it a little unusual. This time,
it's a girl who has decided she's a god, and not without reason -
Yurie's wishes have real power, but as the saying goes - be careful
what you wish for...
1 - The Springtime Trick
Middle-school student Yurie Hitotsubashi's decided on a career path -
she's become a god, as she calmy announces to her friend Mitsue Shijou
in school one day. Classmate Matsuri Saegusa could use a god at
the moment - her parents run a Shinto shrine that's been struggling
recently, and having a real-life god on the premises could be just what
they need. Seems Yurie's godly powers aren't all just im her
head, either, when Yurie's wish for a windy day is answered by a
typhoon...
The big surprise is that Yurie turns out to be a genuine god - go figure. Of course, having her
potential love interest a) be blown away and almost killed by her first
wish and b) barely remember who she is, isn't really a good
thing. Kamichu! (named after Yurie's 'word of power', as it were) has an interesting concept, but suffers from really slow pacing -
it's a slice-of-life show with a twist, in the same sort of way as Zettai
Shonen,
but it's somehow missing a bit of Zettai Shonen's appeal. If the
two shows had aired in differrent seasons Kamichu! may have had more of
a chance, but with only so many hours in the day for anime, there
wasn't enough here to make it one of the shows I'll be able to
follow. Worth checking out if you're a fan of slower series,
though.
