Here's a blast from the past for you - it's been almost a year since these episodes of Shinkon Gattai Godannar
aired in Japan, so maybe putting them under "Now in Japan" is false
advertising. Ph34r my backlog. ^^; The show's still airing and still
unlicensed, however, so here we go...
4 - Shizuru's Comeback
Oasis Base has been attacked - it didn't fare too well, so when the
Memesis responsible turns its attention to Japan, it looks like the
Godannar team will be called in to save the day - but even after
showing its potential in the attack on Oasis Base, this one's stronger
than they expect. The solution seems to be to use Core Gunner, but its
pilot, Shizuru, may not be in any state to go into combat. Meanwhile,
Go's usual over-reaction to just about everything leads to more trouble
with Anna...
5 - A Girl from the Sky
Destroyed Base of the Week is Cosmo Base - leaving young girl Lu
without her father, who went missing while attempting to defend the
base. Lu's escape shuttle crash-lands near Dannar Base, and she ends up
staying with Go & Anna while the destruction of the base is
investigated. Naturally enough, she proves difficult to cheer up,
despite everyone's best efforts. When contact is lost with the Cosmo
Base rescue team, though, Lu is the only person at Dannar Base with a
mecha capable of going into space - giving her a chance to go looking
for her father...
6 - The End of the Dream
A shock for Go - two comrades - Max and Milla, fellow pilots, that he
thought were dead turn out to be alive & in a restricted area of
the base's infirmary - but they may not be themselves. Mentally,
they're like children, while Max's DNA seems to have been subtly
altered. Keeping them secret makes Go behave suspiciously. though. Anna
is convinced he's keeping another woman, and enlists Lu's help to find
out what's really going on. There's trouble, however, when Max awakes
from his coma & steals Core Gunner...
Never mind my backlog, I fear episodes that end with "To be
continued...", which is what we have here. At least that means I won't
be waiting another 10 months to watch the next batch...
First impressions of Godannar were that it was very much along the same lines as Gravion. After watching this batch, I'm seeing that's not a great comparison - Godannar, while it does have its lighter moments, takes itself a lot more seriously than Gravion
ever did. That means that it's missing a certain element of fun, and it
changes the dynamic of the show a lot. That's not to say it's a bad
show or anything - even if you're not usually a fan of mecha shows,
you'll probably find something here that'll catch your attention.
The story so far is focussing on the characters, with a bit of
combat thrown in by way of fanservice - it serves to give you eye-candy
and as a mechanism to develop the characters. The history of the
various bases & the 'war' with Memesis hasn't really been touched
so far & is really just used as a backdrop. I think that works
quite well at this stage - let's get to see how all these characters
tick first - but I hope the other aspects of the story develop as the
show progresses.
At this stage, though, still worth watching. Note to self: watch more soon. |
