Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040 hits its third
volume, and heads straight into big trouble - in the form of two of the
largest mad boomers the Knight Sabers have had to deal with yet.
But don't let them distract you, as they're really sideshows to draw
everyone's attentions away from finding out just what Genom is up to -
and it seems they're up to a lot...
9 - My Nation Underground
There are rumours of boomers disappearing in outlying areas of the city
- although Sylia's quickly able to confirm them as true, she's curious
as to why the incidents haven't appeared on the news, especially as she
doesn't believe a mad boomer is involved. Genom seems to have
other ideas, though - Mason has been investigating the disappearances
himself, which is the best possible indication that something fishy is
going on. When the culprit finally appears, it's more of a
problem than anyone expected. Nene, meanwhile, has found out that
Leon's been keeping a close eye on Priss, and that Priss herself
invited him to one of her live performances - could it be that the
Knight Sabers' hard woman is beginning to soften up?
10 - Woke Up With a Monster
The creature responsible for the missing boomers has finally appeared -
a creature that eats boomers, and has grown to an incredible size as a
result. Realising it's beyond their ability to tackle, Sylia
calls on the Knight Sabers to fall back while she looks for a way to tackle it.
Leon, meanwhile, has been given strict instructions by his superiors
not to investigate the creature further - if it's not a boomer, it
isn't a problem fot the AD Police - but he's not about to sit on the
sidelines and turns to Nene for help, while Priss is beginning to have
serious doubts about Nene's usefulness in battle...
11 - Sheer Heart Attack
Linna takes a break from Tokyo to visit her parents out in the
country. While she's away catching up with her past - and dealing
with family isn't one of her strong points - Sylia's looking into one
of Genom's latest projects, a facility that will bring potentially
unlimited power to the Earth. Construction on the facility has
stopped thanks to boomer problems, but Sylia learns that Mason has his
own plans for the facility. He's also uncovered that Nigel is
responsible for the creation of the Knight Sabers' hardsuits.
While Mason continues to make his plans, Linna has to deal with an
arranged date her parents have set up for her, and the largest mad
boomer yet makes an appearance in Tokyo...
12 - Made in Japan
A military boomer of gargantuan size is on the loose in the city, and
with Linna out of town and Nene stuck on-duty, Priss is the only Knight
Saber available to take it on. The military have dispatched a few
more boomers of their own to take on their stray, making sure the city
is not far short of being a warzone, and nothing they can do seems to
even harm the mad boomer. Linna breaks off her date and hurries
back to Tokyo, determined to play her part, while Nene hacks into the
Ministry of Defence servers to try and get the specs of their
adversary. Meanwhile, Mason seems to have plans to make use of
the Knight Sabers for his own purposes and pays a visit to Nigel, while
Nene uncovers some unexpected information about Mackey...
Is it just me, or is the giant military boomer a shameless Eva
knockoff? Anyway. The real story with these episodes is
just what Mason's up to - it becomes ever clearer that what he wants
and does doesn't necessarily tie up with Genom's plans, but that isn't
about to stop him. Whatever the lab Sylia's father worked in was
working on, he wants it, and quickly. The added revelation about
Mackey's apparent age (or agelessness) adds to the mystery - if her
father was working on boomers, is Mackey a boomer himself? Or am
I just reading too much into the story?
Either way, once again events away from the combat provide the driver
for the story and are far more interesting than the action scenes
themselves. I'm really liking the depth that BGC2040 has under the gloss, and I'm definitely looking foward to the next volume.
