The thing about Revolutionary Girl Utena filler
episodes is that they nearly always make fun of poor Nanami. The
girl finally gets her fair share of the real action here, though, with
a two-parter all of her own, and barely a joke in sight. Shame
the third episodes a recap - but one you may want to watch anyway...
31 - Her Tragedy
Nanami's brother-complex is getting worse, and her feeling that Touga's
becoming more distant from her isn't helping. She's even started
sneaking into the bathroom to watch him shower. Touga, meanwhile,
has been making the most of his status at school to gather quite a
harem around himself. It's enough to kick Nanami's protective instinct
into overdrive - which is just what Akio needs from her, given his
ongoing search for duellists capable of defeating Utena. His
tactics this time are a little different, though - rather than take
Nanami for a drive to End of the World, he invites her to stay his home
along with Utena and Anthy...
32 - The Romance of the Dancing Girls
Nanami continues to catch men in positions they really shouldn't be
caught in, in her eyes at least, to the point where it all becomes to
much for her and she confronts Touga with her feelings - not that it
does her any good, initially, and as a last resort she requests a
transfer away from Ohtori Academy and the problems she's having.
Eventually, though, she gets a phonecall from Touga, who introduces her
to End of the World and her destined duel with Utena...
33 - The Prince who Runs Through the Night
Another recap episode, of sorts. Woo hoo. If for some
reason you skipped any episodes of the Apocalypse arc, this is your
chance to catch up, but if like me you're watching the DVD's, this would be
one to skip, if it weren't for a certain Akio / Utena scene right at the end of the episode...
It's good to see Nanami get some screentime that doesn't entirely
revolve around poking fun at her - although her two-part episode still
isn't entirely humour-free, and it doesn't really stray from the usual Utena formula, so don't be expecting anything out of the ordinary.
The really interesting bit comes at the end of an otherwise missable
recap episode, but Akio and Utena's little drive throws a little
spanner in the works, without really revealing exactly what he's shown
her - has she seen End of the World yet, or is it just a teaser?
With two volumes to go I'm not expecting answers too quickly, but I'm
looking forward to finally seeing the end of this saga...
