Not only is Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040
available as 6 individual discs, it's also been released in a handy
6-disc brick "Complete Collection" set, which lets you get the whole
series for aroung half the price - what's not to like? The only
problem with sets like these is that being able to marathon the series
only makes its flaws stand out that little bit more...
I was pondering back when I started reviewing this series what in
hell's name "Bubblegum Crisis" was supposed to mean. Well,
courtesy of the Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040 FAQ, here's the answer: original series creator Toshimichi Suzuki described the title as "what
happens when you blow a huge bubblegum bubble and it pops and gets all
over your face and hair and won't easily get cleaned up. In other
words, a weird and yucky problem that just won't go away." SO now you know.
Rather than redo episode synopses for 26 episodes, here's links to the
individual disc reviews - the discs contained in this set are exactly
the same as those in the individual releases.
» Volume 1: Genesis
» Volume 2: Crusade
» Volume 3: Leviathans
» Volume 4: Buried Secrets
» Volume 5: Blood & Steel
» Volume 6: For All Mankind
Read all those? Good. As an overall package, BGC2040 comes
out as a series that's well worth checking out, especially with the
lower overall price that a boxset will earn you. It's far from
perfect - there are pacing issues towards the end of the series and the
beginning plays too much to the sort of "monster of the week" routine
that's more at home with a mahou shoujo series - but the centre section
of the series is so good it makes the failings all worthwhile.
Just try not to pick too many plotholes, as there are a few of them
around as well, but do try to at least rent this series. You won't regret it.
