Cowboy Bebop returns in the first of two 3-disc boxsets, giving anyone who has somehow managed to avoid the series up to now a chance to see what they've been missing at an almost bargain price. What are you waiting for?
The discs in this set cover episodes 1-14 of the series, which covers the introduction of all the main characters and two installments of the Vicious / Spike saga, which is the nearest Cowboy Bebop gets to an ongoing story. The rest of the episodes are the usual mix of comic and serious stories.
The comic highlight is Toys in the Attic, a homage to Alien that sees Spike grab his flamethrower in an attempt to flush last year's leftovers out of the airlock. It a genuinely funny episode that does a really good job of sending up its source material.
On the more serious side of things, both Spike and Jet have problems with their old flames - Spike in the two-part story Jupiter Jazz, which brings Vicious back into the story, and Jet in Ganymede Elegy, which sees him chasing down old love Elise's new man. Both episodes mix some good action sequences with bittersweet and moving storylines.
For the full details of what's on the set, check the individual disc reviews - the discs in the set are the same as those used for the individual releases. The box is priced at £39.99 retail, which essentially gives you three discs for the price of two, along with a sturdy chipboard box to keep them in. I call that a good deal, especially for a series as good as this.
