Following quickly on the heels of the TV series, RahXephon: Pluralitas Conciento
takes the tried-and-trusted anime route of providing a
re-interpretation of the story rather than anything new. Question: is
it different enough to be worthwhile?
A retelling of the RahXephon TV series for the big screen, with a little bit more of a focus of the relationship between Haruka & Ayato.
It's Christmas, and the lives of young couple Haruka Mishima &
Ayato Kamina are about to change, drastically. Tokyo comes onder attack
by the Mu, beings from an alternate dimension, causing millions of
people (Haruka among them) to flee the city. Ayato is left behind,
trapped inside the phenomenon known as Tokyo Jupiter that engulfs the
city...
Years later, and the Bahbem Foundation is making plans for what they
term the 'tuning' of the world - plans that will bring Haruka and Ayato
together again, under unexpected circumstances...
Rather than being a project on it's own (like the Escaflowne movie), RahXephon
opts for the 'clip show' treatment - while there are a few new scenes
scattered here and there throughout the movie, most of the show is
scenes from the TV show editied together to tell the story in two hours
instead of thirteen. The new scenes concentrate on two aspects that
have been changed for the movie: Quon, who plays far less of a role
here, and Haruka, whose part is 'merged' with Reika Mishima's to add a
little bit of lost-love spice to the story. The conclusion to the story
has also been pretty much re-animated, although the story for that part
hasn't changed significantly from the TV show.
While the new scenes & the changes made to the characters are
interesting enough in themselves, this still feels too much like one
long recap episode to really be worthwhile. It's probably best
recommended for those who haven't already seen the TV series and want a
cheap & quick way to see what the show is about - if you have already seen the TV series, there's not enough here to make it a worthwhile purchase on its own. For completeists only. |
