Baka & Test, Vampire Bund Streaming to UK Viewers
News and Events
Monday, 15 March 2010 00:00

Baka to Test to ShokanjuI suspect this is accidental, so make the most of it while you can, but it appears that FUNimation's YouTube streams of both Baka & Test and Dance in the Vampire Bund are currently open to UK users - a notable change from the usual story there. Now's your change to legitimately see what all the Vampire Bund fuss is about, or confirm whether it really is true that everyone's gay for Hideyoshi. For ease of reference, here are direct links to the relevant channels: Baka & Test | Dance in the Vampire Bund. Enjoy.

Home Video Release of Vampire Bund to Escape Edits?
News and Events
Wednesday, 10 March 2010 19:41

Dance in the Vampire BundThere's the sound of screeching brakes and a neatly executed u-turn coming from Texas as the moment, as FUNimation have realised what a PR cock-up their planned editing of Dance in the Vampire Bund has turned out to be. Either that, or they've just pulled off a mass trolling of anime fandom. I suspect the former. Read on for the details...

Crunchyroll Signals Removal of Some Shows, Services
News and Events
Tuesday, 09 March 2010 00:00

CrunchyrollCrunchyroll have signalled a few changes in recent days that may have you rushing to catch certain shows while you still have the chance. First, their Download-to-Own service (originally used for shows like Blassreiter and Linebarrels of Iron) will be closing to new purchases on 31st March 2010, while no further downloads of purchased episodes will be allowed from 1st May 2010 - so if you're looking to own any of the shows offered in this way, get a move on.

CR are quite understandably pushing their premium membership as an alternative, which would be fine if shows added to CR for streaming were always going to be there - except that's not now the case, especially with shows originally produced by Kadokawa. Warnings have appeared on a number of Kadokawa shows in recent days, indicating that they'll be removed from CR 30 days after the debut of the show's final episode - so once again, get them while you can. In both cases, let this be a reminder of the main advantage of physical media...

Rave Master Goes DVD-on-Demand
Licensing
Friday, 05 March 2010 00:00

Rave MasterI thought TOKYOPOP had gotten out of the DVD business quite some time ago, but news has surfaced that they're trying something different with shounen adventure series Rave Master. The complete series (51 episodes) is now being offered via DVD-on-demand supplier Createspace for the knockdown price of $39.99 for the 8-disc set - although be aware that the series comes on DVD-R discs instead of the usual retail pressings, and is also in dub-only format. Better than nothing for fans of the series, I guess, but not quite a collectors' edition. Createspace also ship internationally, so UK fans would appear to be in luck. Full details at the show's page on Createspace).

Media Blasters Scores Sayonara Zetsubou-Sensei, Urotsukidoji
Licensing
Friday, 19 February 2010 00:00

Sayonara, Zetsubou-SenseiMedia Blasters' May solicitations reveal one new title and a license rescue about to hit the streets. The new title is high school comedy Sayonara, Zetsubou-Sensei, which follows seriously depressed teacher Itoshiki Nozomu as he learns how to deal with a class led by the overhwelmingly-positive Fuura Kafuka. The series has some generally good buzz around it, although with humour that apparently relies heavily on Japanese culture it may well be a bit of a nightmare to translate. The first (subtitles-only) volume ships late May. Also seeing release that month is former Central Park Media title Urotsukidoji: Legend of the Overfiend, with MB releasing the complete, uncut first season and its accompanying compilation movie. Expect tentacles.

FUNi Rides to Trigun's Rescue
Licensing
Monday, 15 February 2010 10:29

TrigunPerhaps one of the surprising ommissions when FUNimation took on the bulk of Geneon's catalog was sci-fi western Trigun. In case you've been living under a rock for a good while, the series follows the adventures of love-and-peace merchant (and most wanted man on the planet Gunsmoke) Vash the Stampede, aka the Humanoid Typhoon - so-called because of the trail of destruction that follows in his wake. That's not entirely his fault, though, and what starts out as a fun comedy series soon develops into something far more serious and, towards the end, almost heart-rending. It really was one of the stand-out shows when it was first released around 10 years ago. Now, though, it'll be coming around the block again, as FUNi have picked up the license and will be releasing the series on both DVD and Blu-ray (most likely an upscale, before you get too excited). Both are due for release in the Autumn. Welcome back, Vash...
