FUNimation Goes for DBZ Kai
Licensing
Wednesday, 03 February 2010 11:01

Dragonball Z KaiProbably no great surprise, this one, but FUNimation have confirmed that they'll be releasing Dragonball Z Kai later in 2010. Kai is a HD remastering of the original Dragonball Z series, with all the filler neatly stripped out (reducing the series from the original's 291 episodes down to around a hundred) and a re-recorded soundtrack. Not something I'll be rushing out to buy, but I'm sure there are plenty of DBZ fans who will.

Phantom Thief ReinyaCrunchyroll's latest acquisition in Phantom Thief Reinya, a series of animated shorts following the adventures of the eponymous Reinya and her run-ins with the inept Oh-Edo Police Department. The series is a vehicle for Reina Tanaka, from the idol group Morning Musume. The first three episodes are already available (although at the time of writing, the videos were suffering from audio sync issues that CR are trying to fix).

No UK Return for FUNi's Streaming Service
News and Events
Monday, 11 January 2010 15:48

FUNimationBack when FUNimation first pulled the plug on their streaming service for users outside North America, promises were made that it would return to the UK as soon as some outsanding rights issues had been tied up. We've been waiting patiently since then, and apart from the odd day here and there where the site's geolocation service seemed to throw us a bone, we've had depressingly dark screens. So, when FUNi's PR gurus Lance Heiskell and Adam Sheehan were announced as guests on this week's ANNCast (a weekly anime podcast from the good folks at Anime News Network - go get it), I was neither the first nor only person to ask when we'd be getting our access back.

Sadly, the news is not good. It was confirmed during the podcast that, due to those elusive rights issues, UK access to the streaming portal will not be restored. There is a possibility that streaming of some shows can be done by the likes of Manga UK where they pick up the show for UK release (as will be happening with Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood later in the year), but that's it. Very disappointing news.

Crunchyroll Adds Hanamaru Kindergarten
Licensing
Friday, 08 January 2010 11:40

Hanamaru KindergartenNot to be outdone, Crunchyroll had their own announcement for the day - it's great watching Twitter of an evening at the moment, as both FUNi and CR announce at around the same time and it's always interesting to see who gets the best response. CR seem to be winning, just about. Anyway: Hanamaru Kindergarten is their announcement of the day, a series slated for 12 episodes that CR will be simulcasting in the usual way, with the first episode due to hit the site early Monday morning (11 January), UK time. The series is a slice-of-life comedy following three nursery school kids and their teachers - which sounds very "Azumanga Daioh with little kids" to me, and does make me curious.
