Koihime+MusoThere's a certain class of series that has pretty much zero plot and very little that actually happens from one episode to the next, and Koihime+Muso is just such a show. With no plot to rely on, how "good" it is all comes down to the characters and how enjoyable they are to watch - so how do Kan'u and friends do on that count, then..?

Black haired bandit hunter, Kan'u Uncho, is a girl with a bit of a reputation - one that you need to be worried about if your in the bandit business. At the moment, she's investigating a small village that's been plagued by rampaging bandits, and soon finds herself engaged in a fierce battle against the Big Boss of the Rin Rin bandits, Chohi Yokutoku. Which is strange, as the bandits in this case are all kids...

The first bit of confusion I had to get around with this series was the mixed use of formal and private names - so Kan'u is Kan'u a lot of the time but Aisha at others, while Chohi is similarly also called Rin Rin by those who've earned the right to use her private name. It's a cultural thing, and with pretty much every girl in the series using both interchangeably, confusion soon sets in - there are a lot of girls here, you see. Which is, in essence, the point of the series: cute girls, doing cute things, with their cuteness being the show's primary reason for being. It's a bit like K-On!, really, only set in feudal Asia rather than in a highschool club room, and without the damn good music.

As ever with this sort of series, the personalities of the girls run the full gamut of possibilities so that anyone minded to run the show can find one to latch onto. Aisha is probably the most "normal" of the bunch, while the regular cast also has genki girl Rin Rin, warrior of justice Sei, girl-on-a-mission Bachou, and tactical genius Koumei. When you get to the supporting cast, the number of characters suddenly explodes beyond any ability to keep track of, but there genuinely is someone in there for everyone. Trust me.

Their adventures are wrapped up in fairly typical feudal era adventures, with the girls having to deal with bandits, monsters in the mountains, and negotiate the tricky territory of imperial court politics. No male is capable of standing up to our charming girls, of course (who are all dressed with far more colour and flair than anyone around them, and who all seem to have access to a decidedly 20th-century selection of slinky underwear) - showing them as less than perfect would spoil the fun.

And past that there's really not a hell of a lot to write about. Aisha and her companions aren't without their appeal, but while sitting and watching each episode was never what you could call a chore, if you can remember any of the fine detail from each episode 10 minutes after you're done with it, you're a better person than I - memory retention of pretty much everything going on in the series was just about nil. It's eyecandy in its purest form, and I'm undecided as to whether that's a good thing or bad thing. To play with the K-On! comparison a bit: K-On! has fewer characters, so it's easier to "get to know" one, while the music that ties in with the show gives you something to listen to later and extend the experience. Koihime+Muso doesn't have either of those - to Western audiences, anyway - so once the episode ends, it all just washes away and all you've gotten from it is 25 minutes less in the day. That's not necessarily a very good reward for watching.

Still, it's a streamed show, with the Crunchyroll version open for all which makes it easy to try without making any sort of committment (the Anime Network streams are region-locked to North America and require a subscription, but for the money you get the home video version with added boobies, and the OVA 13th episode). One episode certainly won't kill you.
