The 'false minoshiro' that the gang have captures is a mobile library, with enough storage capacity to hold the history of the world - and so, once the necessary user registration formalities are over, they're quick to make use of its knowledgebase. But when their questions lead the library to reveal the events around civilisation's downfall and the Dark Ages that followed, it quickly becomes too much for some of them to take in...

5 - Pursuit on a Hot Night
The monster rat explodes, killing the monk and itself. Defenseless against the queerats, the gang flee, with Saki and Satoru being separated from the others and captured. After escaping confinement, the pair are rescued by Squera, a queerat from the Robber Fly colony who brings them before his queen and asks for their help against their rivals of the Ground Spider colony who threaten to ravage their colony. Saki and Satoru do not reveal to them that their powers are sealed, and flee by themselves when the invasion begins...

6 - Escape
Saki and Satoru get themselves trapped with no apparent chance of escape, until Saki remembers Satoru's mantra and uses it to have him recover his Powers. Instead of fleeing with her, though, Satoru decides to fight the Ground Spiders, aided by Squera and the surviving warriors of the Robber Fly colony. As the group survives several ambushes made by the enemy, Satoru shows signs of fatigue for overusing his abilities, but despite Saki's protests, he moves on until they have an encounter with a massive army...

Saki, Satoru and their Robber Fly allies encounter the bulk of the Ground Spider army - at least several thousand rats, in five separate formations. Hard enough to take out one group when your Powers are at full strength - and thanks to the constant barrage of attacks and ambushes that he's had to deal with, Satoru's just about at his limit. Worse, the Spiders quickly realise they're there, and go on the offensive...

It's four days since Shun was last seen, and the others have decided that they have to track him down - both to save their friend, and to learn what he meant with the warnings that he gave to Saki. If the gang are truly being watched, though, taking action to rescue their friend may not be the best thing to do right now...

10 - More than the Darkness
Saki has found Shun, but he's a long way from the boy she last say only a few days earlier - well on his way to becoming a Karmic Demon, the area around him is now as much illusion as it is reality, and he asks Saki to leave, for her own safety; a request she can't grant him, until she hears the truth about what's happening to him...

11 - Distant Thunder in Winter
Life is continuing as normal, but Saki can sense that something's not right - the world as it is, is not how she remembers it should be. For one, Ryou from Group 2 in the Unified School is now in Group 1 - and everyone else seems to think he's been there all along. And that she and Ryou are an almost certain couple - ever though she remembers very little about him. There's someone she feels she should remember, though - a disembodied voice in her head. Could it be that her memories have been tampered with..?

12 - Weak Link
Saki sits down with head of the ethics committee, Asahina Tomiko, who begins to tell her the other side of the town’s history. It seems that Saki, like her mother, is destined to take a major role in the life of the town - and those destined for leadership need to know the truth of the world. Meanwhile, Mamoru - unable to deal with the events going on around him - runs away from home...

13 - Reunion
Saki and the others follow Mamoru's tracks, and eventually find him in a shelter. They also meet Squnk, a queerat they'd met years earlier and who had just saved Mamoru's life. Clearly aware of her secrets, the Committee members subject her to a detailed grilling - informed by what Satoru had already told them...

15 - Her Majesty

When she wakes again, she finds herself back at the Robber Fly colony's village, where they meet Squeara once more. And there have been some significant changes there since they last met. With the time allowed to them to find Mamoru and Maria fast running out, the pair seek Squeara's help in finding out where they've gone to, even though they're not sure that he and his clan can be trusted...

16 - To Saki, My Love
Saki reads Maria's farewell letter, which asks Saki and Satoru to tell the village that she and Mamoru have died - but despite Maria's instructions, and with only a day left before their deadline to being Mamoru back expires, Saki and Satoru continue to search for them. As hope dwindles, Saki begins to experience bizarre and troubling nightmares, in which a vision of Shun tells her not to aid in her friend's escape - and that Maria has to die...

17 - Footsteps of Destruction
Several years have passed since Maria and Mamoru disappeared, and Saki, now 26 years old, is working in the Department of Mutant Management when she's visited by Satoru, who brings news of an unprovoked attack among the Monster Rats, whose colonies are now divided into two large alliances. Kiroumaru and Yakomaru, the leaders of each alliance, are summoned to be questioned about the incident, but with both leaders exchanging accusations, no conclusion is reached and the conflict between the two sides subsequently escalates into war...

18 - Scarlet Flower
The Robber Fly haven't just defeated the Giant Hornet clan, they're pretty much annihilated them - and there are enough questions over the method of the victory, and some battlefield curiosities, that the humans are worried. Meanwhile, during a visit to a local festival, Saki is convinced that she sees Maria and Mamoru...

19 - Darkness
The order has been given to destroy the Monster Rats, but that idea's turning out to be easy to say, hard to carry out - the creatures are proving adept at picking off their 'Gods', and while others are still convinced that their Powers guarantee victory, Saki and Satoru are beginning to wonder if they've over-reached - from what they know of Yakomaru, he wouldn't start a fight unless he was certain he could win. When Satoru and the other survivors of their group reach the town's hospital, though, what they find there explains why the rats' uprising has been so successful - and terrifies them all...

20 - A Cold and Sunlit Place
As they float down the river, Saki and Satoru become aware that they're being followed, by whatever creature was behind the slaughter at the hospital. For some reason, it's not attacking them, perhaps waiting for them to lead it to other victims. Their chances of survival are looking bleak, but while Saki comes close to breaking down, Satoru's not ready to give up just yet. The pair are able to elude their pursuer, for now, but it soon becomes clear it's not the only beast about...

22 - Tokyo
Saki and Satoru hear the story of the last survivor of the team sent to annihilate the Monster Rats, listening in horror as he tells them what appears to be Squeara's true plan. He also carries a message from Saki's mother - information from the town's secret archives, about a weapon that may allow them to defeat the Ogre. To find it, they'll need to go to Tokyo - considered cursed land by both humans and mutants...

23 - The Face of the Boy
Saki and the others continue their trek through Tokyo's underground, searching for the Psycho Buster - and Saki's beginning to notice that her thoughts aren't quite her own. Tokyo is now a true hell - a reflection of the impression that those with Power have of it, their thoughts brought into reality. Saki knows this, but doesn't know how she knows it - and it seems that even her thoughts are affecting the hazards they're facing in their search...

24 - Torchlight in the Darkness
Shun's 'visit' is short-lived, but he seems to have gotten her back to the surface in safety - and then disappears. Inui wasn't so lucky. Kiroumaru soon tracks Saki down and take her back to the cave where Satoru is waiting, having been injured himself. They now have the weapon they need, and just need to get close enough to the Ogre to release it - but Saki's beginning to have doubts that killing it is the right thing to do...

25 - From the New World
Saki's doubts that the Ogre isn't actually an ogre are becoming too great for her to ignore - there are clues in her behaviour that are feeding those doubts, but in such a dire situation she has to resort to drastic measures that she instantly regrets. Later, with Yakomaru safely in custody, she and Satoru have a chance to speak to him about his motives for trying to eradicate humanity...
