Super GALS! - Volume 5Almost more about Mami than Ran, this disc - which is a real turn-up for the books. Super GALS! #5 awaits...

19 - The Sun! Sun, Sun -> Summer Girl
Summer! Ocean! You know the drill... Yamato's arranged for a secret beach date with Miyu - or so he thinks, until Ran & co turn up. Ran's gotten herself a part-time job at a beach hut, and the rest of the gang have tagged along - except Rei, which leave Aya at a bit of a loose end. Meanwhile, Nii's presence at the beach hut causes a bit of a stir, and Mami's turned up as well...

20 - Dreamy-Eyed - Mami -> Her First Love
Mami gets an episode of her own :) Kou-chan is Mami's first love (going back a few years, here...). He's been away in the States for a few years, but he's finally coming back for a visit. Of course, the Mami he knows is the Ojou-sama version, not the Gal version - so can Mami keep her more common side a secret? Not this Ran constantly around, she can't... Meanwhile, Ran's in a pinch - summer hols are almost over, and she hasn't even started on her homework yet. Getting someone to her her with it isn't proving easy, either...

21 - It's Certain Victory! Go! Go! -> Sports Fest
It's the start of the new school term - and Ran still doesn't have all her homework done... Aya's still pining over Otohata, as it looks like he's gotten himself a new girlfriend. Meanwhile, the sports fesitval approaches - Naka-sen would like his class to win it just once before he retires, so Ran offers to help him out - in exchange for him forgetting about some missing homework...

22 - High School Culture Fest - Para Para -> Meisho Queen?
It's Culture Festival time at Meisho #1 High School (where Otohata & Nii go). Getting in is a problem - thanks to the boys' popularity, it's an all-ticket affair - but Nii comes to the rescue with free Premium tickets. The Datchu Detectives are there, too, with strict instructions from Yamato to make sure that Miyu doesn't run into trouble with any high-school boys - although an all-day Odaiba Cop marathon could scupper their surveillance plans. Meanwhile, Ran & Mami enter the Meisho Queen contest, sparking off their rivalry once more, while Aya tries to get some quality time alone with Otohata, and ends up with a result...

2 main areas that this batch of episodes have focussed on: the growing sort-of-friendship between Ran & Mami (and who would've thought that would've happened, back at the beginning of the series), and Aya's continuing efforts to get somewhere with Otohata, which finally meet with some success at the Meisho Cultural Festival. It's almost like Ran's just here for comic relief between the heavier love-lives of Mami & Aya...

Not that that's a bad thing. For almost any show, a shift in focus now & then keeps you from getting bored & keeps the story from becoming too predictable. It helps that I like Mami & Aya myself, mind you... The real point of the story is how these two are moving on, though, and it's presented really well, without getting too heavy in tone. Ran & Tatsukichi provide the usual comedy routine, and poor Nii still gets stepped on in his attempts to make Ran take romantic notice of him.

Overall, then, pretty much the usual mix that Super GALS! serves up, just with the focus having shifted to a different set of characters for now. Good stuff, & still as enjoyable as it was with the first disc...
