More filler fun from Inu Yasha, with some invisibility issues being played with before the return of Akitoki, who you may remember is the feudal era's doppleganger of Kagome's potential modern-era love-interest, Hojo. The thing with Kagome's love-life, though, is that we already know who her interests really lie with...
136 - A Strange Invisible Demon Appears!
This travelling business is no fun when you've run out of money, and so Inuyasha and the others are back to working their way around the countryside again. Their travels bring them across the path of an old exorcist they've met before, who has been called into a village to deal with an invisible demon who's been stealing from the village at night. As ever, she's not really up to the job, though, and asks for some help from the gang...
137 - An Ancestor Named Kagome
Kagome's back in the modern era, suffering through her high school tests again (which would be much less of a problem if she didn't keep waltzing off to the past, I'm sure). During a break in the torture, Hojo brings her something that may be of interest: his family tree, which shows that far in the past, he had an ancestor by the name of Kagome. Coincidence? Or could Kagome have become trapped in the past and settled down with one of Hojo's ancestors? There is a possible candidate, of course - Akitoki, who's approached Inuyasha and the others in the feudal age for help with a mission that he's on...
138 - Mountain of Demons: Survival of the Duo
The attack by the demon ninjas sees Kagome and Akitoki separated from the others, and while Inuyasha deals with their attackers, Kagome and Akitoki are left with little chance but to head for the Shrine of Furai on their own - it's the Naginata that the demons are after, after all, so if it can be purified before they get their hands on it, that should be the end of the problem. Sango and Miroku, meanwhile, begin searching for the missing pair, but the only evidence of them they can find suggests they didn't survive their fall...
This review will be a short one, as there really isn't much happening here - unlike most filler volumes, which have at least a little nod towards the main Naraku / shikon storyline, this volume is all filler, with nothing of huge interest. The first episode of the three is the best of the bunch, with some great comic moments as Shippo's new invisibility technique doesn't work quite as planned. The sequence were a no-longer-invisible Sango tails Miroku through the streets while he tries to chat up the locals is great fun, with Miroku quickly losing his Mojo as an ever-more-angry Sango stays two steps behind him while being completely unaware that he can see her. He'll behave himself for a while - maybe.
The other two episode are less interesting, mainly as they focus on one of the least interesting characters in the series. I'm treating Hojo and Akitoki as one character, as to all intents and appearances they are - but he / they are also one of the most dull and personality-less characters in the series. That means that a multi-part story built around him doesn't exactly fill me with anticipation. There is some fun to be had here, once the demon ninjas arrive (why would a demon need to learn ninja skills anyway? Aren't they all lethal killing machines to start with?), but that doesn't quite balance out the tedium of having to watch the fedual era's greatest wimp for more than five minutes.
So, average at best and a volume for completists only - you certainly wouldn't be missing anything important if you skipped over it. Hopefully we'll be moving onwards to better things soon...
